Cameroon Publishes 2022 Mining Report to Avert Removal from EITI

The Cameroon government on Wednesday, March 12, published a report detailing mining and oil exploitation activities carried out in the country in 2022. The publishing of these reports is mandatory for members of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), an international organisation that regulates activities in the mining, oil and gas sectors.

Cameroon’s 2022 report comes one year after the EITI suspended the Central African nation for lack of transparency in proceeds from the mining and oil industries. The EITI could delist Cameroon from the organization if it does not take appropriate measures to ensure transparency in the mining sector.

Last year’s suspension from EITI faulted the oil-rich country for its dealings with Glencore, an Anglo-Swiss multinational mining company.

There are ongoing court cases in Cameroon and the United Kingdom relating to bribery and corruption between Glencore officials and some top Cameroonian government officials.

Averting Dismissal from EITI

The Cameroon’s Ministry of Mines, Industries, and Technological Development said the essence of the report is to avoid another EITI suspension of Cameroon.

“The objective is to secure the lifting of this suspension, thereby averting delisting, and to ensure compliance with the 2023 EITI Standard,” the ministry said in a press statement.

The government released report in Yaounde in the presence of top government officials, IMF, and EITI’s permanent secretary in Cameroon, and the Minister of Mines, Prof Fuh Calistus Gentry.

Aside from being minister of mines, Prof Fuh Calistus is also the vice chairperson of EITI in Cameroon.

“It is noteworthy that the 2022 report marks Cameroon’s sixteenth EITI submission and its inaugural report produced in accordance with the revised EITI standards and requirements. The report was adopted on 10 March 2025, following the committee meeting,” the ministry added.

The government did not provide full details of the report, especially about measures it has taken to ensure greater transparency in the mining sector.

The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative is an international organisation that fosters transparency and accountability within extractive industries, such as mining, oil and gas.

EITI advocates for governments to publish, on a regular basis, comprehensive information pertaining to revenues generated from the exploitation of natural resources.
