Cameroon’s President, Paul Biya on Friday March 31, 2023 signed a decree appointing thirty senators to complete the 100-member chamber.

70 of the senators were elected March 12, 2023 throughout ten regions of the country.

Some of those appointed are children of some members who died in the last legislature.

Political commentators say, it appears some families have been granted life peerage at the Senate.

According to the presidential decree, Seidou Mbombo Njoya was appointed senator from the West region.

He is the son of the late Sultan of Bamum, Mbombo Njoya Ibrahim.

It should be recalled that the late Sultan was an appointed Senator in the last legislature before journeying to his ancestors.

Also appointed was Ekoko Mukete, traditional ruler of Bafaw people in Kumba, South West region.

He succeeded his father, Mfon V.E Mukete, as traditional ruler when he ceded the throne to him for age reasons.

Late Mfon V.E Mukete was an appointed member of the Senate.

He was the eldest member of the upper, a position he held till he journeyed home in the last legislature.
