At least twenty young people including women, elderly persons, children have been killed in Mbonge, a Subdivision in Meme, South West Region of Cameroon.
The killing has been described as the latest massacre in the ongoing armed-conflict in Cameroon’s Anglophone Regions – where separatists are fighting for an independent state called Ambazonia.
Among those summarily executed in the Friday military raid are “about nine separatist fighters,” sources have told MMI.
Government justifies killings
Sources have told Mimi Mefo Info that “the Massacre” was carried out by government security operatives who stormed the village, assembled the villagers and shot them dead indiscriminately.
While Government propaganda pages on social media have been quick to claim all those killed were separatists fighting against the state, the information has proven false as women, the old and even children are among the victims.
“The preliminary information we have established is that a Massacre has taken place and to cover it up, the military is staging fake objects…,” says a source who refused to be named for fear of reprisal attacks.
A picture of the scene, the source further reveals, “… shows where they were arrested and then boys were selected and killed and military brandished dane guns and stuff they carried around on them to show they are Amba Boys…”
It is not the first time
It should be recalled that it is not the first time soldiers are killing with impunity in Cameroon’s English-speaking Regions where a bloody conflict has ensued for five years.
Similar action was taken on February 14, 2020 in Ngarbuh village in the North West region where the military with the aid of local groups stormed the village and killed dozens including a pregnant woman and children.
Several other villages including Small Babanki, Mautu, Pinyin, Bali Nyonga, and Mankon have suffered a similar fate as the army continues denying any wrongdoing, even when caught on camera.
