Cameroon: Teenage boy easing community access to medical care

Teenage Cameroonian student, Simeon Azeh Kongnyuy is playing his part to bridge the wide gap between adequate health care and reliable information.

At 16, he has released his first book titled ‘Health Companion’.

The book aims to assist parents, as many tend to avoid hospitals for one reason or the other.

“I took to writing at the age of 15, but I had alot of discouragement as people told me I couldn’t go far, because I was still young” he says.

After persisting, Simeon emerged winner of Tantoh Group Support Fund Programme, having his first work published.

“I have never given up. I kept pursuing this dream of reaching out to all these parents out there, so that they can stop neglecting diseases” he explains.

In a bid to see his goal of better health care achieved, the youngster created a health foundation and has since put in his best.

“I wanted it to serve alot of purposes such as creating employment and also carry out campaigns to help the sick. Our last campaign was at the Misaje Health Centre, Nkambe Health District and we plan to extend but we need support from other Cameroonians for this to work” he pleads.

Simeon adds that he and other persons of goodwill have also started a digital health platform. Operating on WhatsApp, the platform, he says aims to bridge the gap between the hospital and the community.
