Children afflicted by eye cancer in Cameroon are finding hope in specialized doctors in Maroua who are going great lengths to restore their sight.
They are between two and five years old. In the arms of their parents—exhausted by months, sometimes years, of medical wandering—these children from all corners of Cameroon have converged on the Meskine Baptist Hospital in Maroua, Far North.
For many families, this was the last hope.
Upon arrival, their faces are heavy with anguish. Some parents speak of sleepless nights, of the fear of seeing the light permanently fade from their children’s eyes. Others have already heard the chilling word: retinoblastoma.
A rare but devastating cancer of the eye, it often strikes the very young. Added to these cases are other severe eye conditions, sometimes worsened by years of delayed diagnosis and inadequate care.
From the very first day, the hospital teams set to work. Specialized surgeons examine each child, assess the urgency, and explain the available options to the parents. Here, there are no miracle promises, but a firm commitment: to try everything to save what can still be saved.
Some procedures require the highest precision. Pediatric cataract surgery, for example, is a delicate operation, fraught with risks and potential complications. Every movement counts; every minute in the operating theatre is a race against time.
In the hallways, the atmosphere wavers between anxious silence and sighs of relief. A mother holds her child close after the procedure. A father, eyes glistening, murmurs his gratitude.
For these families, who have visited multiple hospitals without success, this care marks a turning point. A suspended moment where fear recedes, giving way to a fragile but tenacious glimmer: hope.
Here in Maroua, it is not just a succession of surgical operations. It is destinies being transformed. Tiny lives being given another chance to see the world—and, perhaps, to live it fully.
