Cameroonian comedian Yaakii Bella, currently based in Canada, is facing significant online criticism for a derogatory joke aimed at teachers. Recently, Yaakii, who boasts over 195,000 followers on Facebook, posted, “Only if it is urgent; don’t marry a teacher.” This comment has sparked outrage among many, who perceive it as disrespectful to educators.

Strong Reactions from the Teaching Community

Teacher Ndifor Richard responded strongly, stating that the “derogatory remark not only disrespects the tireless dedication of educators who have shaped our future, but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes about their worth.” He urged Yaakii to consider the societal impact of her words, especially on the morale of those who dedicate themselves to teaching. “Such careless statements are not just unfunny; they are a disgrace to the profession that educated and empowered her. We demand an apology, as it’s essential for public figures to promote respect for the vital role teachers play in our lives,” he added.

Another critic, Baiye Nkeng, expressed that Yaakii’s comment “only goes to expose her emptiness, primitivity, and ingratitude.” Ewane Mbong chimed in, asserting, “Whatever could be the motivation behind her unfunny joke, we are happily married to beautiful, hard-working, and responsible women, and this wasn’t under emergency conditions.”

Defiant Response and Continued Criticism

Yaakii’s comments have made her a trending topic online. In response to the backlash, she remained defiant, saying she felt no need to apologize. “I did not send you to become a teacher. If you are not happy as a teacher, deal with it,” she declared during a live broadcast on Friday evening.

“Teachers always feel we owe them some allegiance. No, we don’t owe you anything. You did a job and received your pay. If you feel your pay was less, then your bargaining power was low,” she continued, sharing her own negative experiences with teachers, including allegations of sexual harassment she faced at age 9. “If teachers had a positive impact in your lives, then that’s not the case with me. My life almost became miserable because of teachers,” she said.

Previous Criticism and Mixed Reactions

This is not the first time the Cameroonian comedian has drawn criticism; last week, popular online figure Pius Beri described her content as boring, a post that was later removed. Beri questioned why anyone would follow Yaakii. Despite the backlash, some believe her comments were merely a joke and remain unbothered by the criticism.
