Cameroonian migrants in Lithuania decry ‘inhumane’ treatment

Some Cameroonians currently residing in Lithuania, Europe, say the treatment they get is nothing to write home about.

After going through thick and thin to get there, they say the government of their host nation treats them as outcasts.

“… They treat us badly and force us to sign documents to go back home to our countries,” testifies one of them, who added that being locked up and starved remains the order of the day.

“As migrants we don’t have access to health facilities,” the immigrant who refused to be named stated.

Of the many African migrants now in that situation, about 150 are said to be from Cameroon, with a majority arriving the European nation through Belarus.

Their immediate desires, the migrant said, are for “… the government to free us, and treat us well. We are humans, we need protection and better life. Some people need to get to Germany, Finland, and other EU countries.”

“Leaving Belarus to Lithuania is not an easy journey, we sleep in the forest for six days,” the migrant remarked further, revealing the least they should get is empathy. “We have been in detention for four months… we asked for Asylum but they refused… all they ask us is to go back home,” our source adds.

With Cameroon facing two armed conflicts in the English speaking regions and the Far North region, many more of its citizens continue to seek safe havens abroad.

They have also raised similar concerns of poor treatment in middle eastern countries, but the governments concerned and that of Cameroon have remained indifferent to the plight of these persons.
