Cameroonian shares ordeal faced living in Nigeria as refugee

A Cameroonian living as a refugee in Nigeria has shared some of the challenges he and others face in Nigeria fleeing from the violence in the Anglophone regions. Talking to MMI, Yufonyuy Abdu said he spent over 20.000FCFA just leave Cameroon. He later on paid the sum of 6000Naira again after entering Nigeria.

Despite having registered like several other refugees, he says he has received no aid of any kind.

“Maybe things are coming and our leaders are keeping it for them selves. The only help I got from them since I came here is the ID card they gave us. I have never received oil or magi from any group or the UNHCR” he said

To make ends meet, Abdu says he had to quit the Refugee camp and get a job as a gateman. Even that he says can barely feed him.

“They said all that they gave me was shelter” he told MMI. Others he says have not been so lucky and have resulted to other unorthodox means. Some he fears “may become thieves because we have nothing doing.”

Abdu is one of several thousands of refugees living in neighboring Nigeria as a result of the Anglophone crisis. Despite the amount of aid taken to them, humanitarian groups have said it’s not enough due to limited resources.

With the National Dialogue approaching, many hope it will finally address and bring the crisis to an end. We could not get reactions from the UNHCR.
