The journey at the Africa Cup of Nations has ended for the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon as they were kicked out on penalties by the Pharaohs of Egypt.
Cameroonians on social media have targeted Clinton Njie, as he missed the 4th penalty which handed victory over to the Pharaohs of Egypt.
Social Media users had torn into the player since the start of the competition. Many had opined that the attacker was not in his best form and so bringing him at that stage was a big gamble by the coach, which backfired heavily.
Memes have also circulated on social media, and threats have been directed at the former Tottenham Hotspur player.
Someone tweeted about Clinton’s penalty, “Clinton Njie with easily the worst penalty I’ve ever seen.”
“Clinton Njie was supposed to be the next big thing but he’s never improved,” another Twitter user added while commenting on the player’s career which has stagnated since his breakout year in the national team.
“I’m not vexed we lost to #TeamEgypt it’s a game of chance and at least #TeamCameroon reached semi-finals but you see that Clinton Njie penalty kick, my blood is finding it hard to accept,” one user lamented.
However, many others have stood up for the player, and insisted that the attacks directed at the player for a game anyone could have lost are unnecessary.
“Why all the Abuses on the Boy Clinton Njie? He’s a good player you should understand, some players are good game starters while in the tournament he’s mostly been coming on as a Sub I wish y’all knew the pressure!”
Another neutral user said, “I sincerely think it’s high time we tone down on the Clinton Njie banter. He made a mistake years ago, we shouldn’t remind him of it every chance we have.”
Another Twitter user more concerned with the mental health of the players suggested “#Cyberbullying is real. As much as we are hurt, please let’s know the mental health of our players is our key factor in the next matches. #MeantalHealth #TeamCameroon #GoEasyOnem”
