Cameroon’s dismal performance at the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) has thrown the nation into a frenzy of finger-pointing, with Coach Rigobert Song squarely in the crosshairs. Yet, to solely cast blame at his feet would be simplistic, neglecting the wider complexities that contributed to the Indomitable Lions’ early exit.

Rigobert’s Tactical Crossroads:

Song’s inexperience as head coach has drawn heavy criticism. His defensive-minded approach stifled creativity, resulting in a plodding, disjointed style of play. Questions abound regarding his player selection, particularly the omission of seasoned veterans like Choupo-Moting and Fai Collins from the call-up to the tournament. Their leadership and experience could have proved invaluable in a high-pressure tournament.

However, dissecting Rigobert’s record reveals a mixed bag. Six wins in twenty-three games suggest competence, but nine losses and eight draws paint a picture of inconsistency. Was this performance solely indicative of poor coaching, or were external factors at play?

Players missing the roar:

Blaming solely the coach risks overlooking the players’ lacklustre performance. The youthful Indomitable Lions often looked timid and uninspired, lacking the fiery determination that once characterised the team. The “amateurish” display, as some fans put it, raises questions about individual commitment and focus.

The absence of the “dream team spirit” was palpable. Individual flashes of brilliance from Wooh and Tolo couldn’t mask the overall sluggishness and tactical blunders. The Gambia match exposed their vulnerabilities, highlighting a reliance on luck rather than skill.

Beyond Benching:

While veterans’ absences is lamented, were the chosen players truly ready for the challenge? Their performances, when given the opportunity, were hardly stellar. Attributing the entire debacle to benching without evaluating the actual replacements paints an incomplete picture.

A Call for Shared Responsibility:

Ultimately, Cameroon’s AFCON disappointment demands a broader analysis. While Rigobert’s tactical shortcomings and questionable selection decisions played a role, the players’ lack of spirit and focus cannot be ignored. The blame pie, unfortunately, has multiple slices.

Moving forward, Cameroon needs a critical introspection, addressing both coaching strategies and player commitment. Only then can the Indomitable Lions reclaim their roar and return to their rightful place as African football giants.
