Consecrated individuals across Cameroon are coming together to observe the Day of Prayer for Peace on October 4, 2024. Fr. Ferdinand Owono Ndih, the president of the National Conference of Major Superiors of Cameroon (NCMSC), announced this in a release.

This day of prayer was initiated in 2023 in response to the urgent need for peace within the nation. The annual event, coinciding with the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi, aims to inspire nationwide prayers that promote peace and reconciliation amid the country’s ongoing challenges.

In a heartfelt reminder addressed to the country’s consecrated clergy, Fr. Ferdinand emphasised the essential role of prayer in fostering peace. A portion of the note states, “As consecrated persons, our most concrete action begins with prayer… to be in the world these witnesses of Christ concerned for the well-being of all and artisans of peace.”

Cameroon in Dire Need of Prayers

In light of the turbulence facing the country—ranging from floods to armed conflicts—the letter underscored the pressing need for reconciliation and the crucial role religious leaders play in setting an example.

Consequently, the Ordinary Jubilee of the Church will see consecrated individuals celebrate from January 31 to February 2, 2025, in Yaoundé. The theme “Pilgrims of Hope on the Paths of Reconciliation and Peace” aligns with the Day of Prayer on October 4, 2024.

Furthermore, as part of the Day for Peace observance, mass services dedicated to peace will take place across the nation, accompanied by the recitation of the Prayer for Peace attributed to Saint Francis of Assisi. This initiative serves as a spiritual avenue that fosters unity and hope, especially for the victims affected by Cameroon’s internal conflicts.

Consecrated persons should maintain their commitment to prayer and stay “in communion of heart” as they resume their community and pastoral activities. They are also counting on the communion of all Christian faithful.

“We are counting on everyone’s broad awareness so that this action through prayer keeps us in communion of heart,” the statement read.
