Chad: Interim Government reinstates Parliament

The Parliament which was dissolved on April 20, 2021 by the Transitional Military Council has now been reinstated by the same body.

The National Assembly in Chad has been authorised to resume its functions until the full establishment of the Transition Military Council, which will exercise full legislative power during the transition period.

The announcement was made to the Parliament on April 29 by Haroun Kabadi, former Prime Minister of Chad.

The reinstatement of the Chadian Parliament was made in accordance with Article 100 of the Transition charter, which states that while an establishment of a Transitional Council is still pending, its attributes are transfered to the National Assembly.

The reinstating of the National Assembly follows some violent protests that were recorded in the Chadian capital, N’djamena by civilians. Civilians protested against the military regime in place and have demanded for the establishment of a civil transition council.
