Collapsing building kills two kids, injures many in New Bell, Douala

Two children have died while several others have sustained injuries after a building collapsed in New Bell, Douala, Cameroon’s economic capital.

The incident took place today August 30, 2022 at about 1 am precisely at Marché Oignons.

“We suddenly heard a large noise at about 1 am. When we woke up, we realized half of the building had collapsed,” an inhabitant of the neighborhood told MMI.

Firefighters were alerted and later arrived at the scene to evacuate the victims.

“Others are at the laquintinie hospital, as the firefighters rushed to the scene this morning,” our source added.

The collapse was reportedly a result of poor construction.

“People began parking out of the other part of the building for fear that it will collapse. The building in question was poorly constructed,” he regretted.

Another source recounted: “we went down and heard one of them crying under the collapsed building, before he was saved by the population. The man, with sand all over him, was saved with his wife, but their two children died.”

The storey building was simultaneously used as store for onions and housing.
