Commonwealth boss urges government to address root causes of Anglophone crisis

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland has urged the government of cameroon to ensure the fundamental causes of the conflict in the English- speaking regions of the country are addressed in the implementation of the resolutions of the just ended national dialogue convened by president Biya.

While pledging the readiness of the Gentleman club’s support that may be needed in rebuilding peace in Cameroon, Scotland said
“I hope that the outcomes of the recently concluded five-day National Dialogue will be meaningfully implemented in a manner that addresses the fundamental causes of the conflict and its devastating impact so far. The Commonwealth stands ready to provide any support that may be required”.

Meanwhile, Patricia Scotland has hailed the move by President Paul Biya to release the leaders and militants of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement, MRC political party .

She also commended government for freeing some individuals arrested in connection with the Anglophone crisis.

The Commonwealth boss described such moves as a goodwill and confidence building measure towards archieving lasting peace in the Northwest and Southwest Regions.

“The release of Mr Kamto, several of his supporters, as well as 330 persons who had been detained in connection with the ongoing political crisis, is an important goodwill and confidence building measure towards building trust among all stakeholders in addressing the conflict in the North-West and South-West regions” she said.

However, the commonwealth Secretary general has called on both Parties to the conflict to work together in good faith to ensure the return of peace in the crisis-hit Northwest and Southwest Regions. “I urge all parties to work earnestly together to achieve lasting peace” Patricia Scotland concluded.

Patricia Scotland visited Cameroon late 2017 but was highly criticised for failing to press the Biya regime address the Anglophone crisis.
