On the morning of April 29, 2025, in the village of Gagal, the usual calm was interrupted, this time, not by cries of distress but by applause and visible relief. After several weeks of uncertainty, the last hostages held in the Nanaye Division were released.

The release followed a joint operation by Chadian security forces, supported by local vigilance committees. Four individuals were returned safely to their community.

Community Gathers to Welcome Former Hostages

Residents of Gagal gathered in the village centre to receive the freed captives. Among them were children, elders, and women, reflecting the involvement of the entire community. Government Delegate Abdelmanan Khatab led the ceremony, recognising the efforts of the families and local teams involved in the operation.

“This day marks a turning point,” Khatab told the local press, accompanied by the Nanaye prefect and military officials. “It reflects the strength of unity and resilience in the face of adversity.”

Local Vigilance Played a Critical Role

The operation required extensive coordination in a region still exposed to armed incursions and kidnappings. Community-based vigilance committees, composed of local youth and elders, contributed significantly by monitoring suspicious activity and providing intelligence to security forces. Their input helped guide the final operation that led to the hostages’ release.

Authorities view this partnership as a model for rural security. “Gagal sends a clear message: local unity is an effective tool against disorder,” said one officer involved in the operation.

Support for Survivors and Community Recovery

Though visibly affected by their ordeal, the former hostages have begun receiving medical and psychological support. Authorities have committed to their gradual reintegration into the community.

While the village is still recovering from the events, the recent operation marks a step toward improved security and cohesion. The release has provided a renewed sense of purpose and optimism in Gagal.
