Cameroon’s hunt for a new head coach appears to be taking a familiar turn, with reports suggesting that former managers Antonio Conceicao and Hugo Broos are under consideration for the vacant position.

Jeune Afrique, a respected African news magazine, broke the news that both Conceicao and Broos are on the shortlist being analyzed by the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT).

This development comes one week after the dismissal of Rigobert Song as the national team coach.

His contract was terminated upon expiration following a string of disappointing results from the national team during his mandate.

Conceicao is no stranger to the Indomitable Lions, having served as their head coach from 2019 to 2022.

During his tenure, the Portuguese manager achieved a respectable third-place finish at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and successfully navigated the team through the World Cup qualifying playoffs, only to fall short in the crucial double-header against Algeria.

Despite these accomplishments, his contract was not renewed in February 2022, leading to a protracted legal dispute with FECAFOOT that is still ongoing.

Broos, on the other hand, boasts a continental title with Cameroon, having led them to a surprise victory at the 2017 AFCON.

He also recently achieved success with South Africa, guiding them to a third-place finish at the 2023 AFCON in neighboring Ivory Coast.

However, his previous stint with Cameroon was marred by a contractual disagreement with FECAFOOT, ultimately preventing him from defending his title at the 2019 AFCON.

The inclusion of both Conceicao and Broos on the shortlist has sparked mixed reactions amongst Cameroonian football fans.

Some view the former managers’ experience and familiarity with the team as valuable assets, while others remain skeptical, citing past controversies and the desire for a fresh start.

FECAFOOT is yet to officially confirm the shortlist or announce a timeline for the appointment of a new coach.

However, with the 2025 AFCON qualifiers approaching, the pressure is mounting to find a suitable candidate who can lead the Indomitable Lions back to continental glory.

The decision they make will undoubtedly shape the future of Cameroonian football and could reignite old debates or usher in a new era for the national team.
