Coronavirus: 433 deaths in Cameroon forces government to emphasize barrier measures’ respect

The Ministry of Public Health, MINSANTE, has renewed calls for Cameroonians to respect COVID-19 barrier measures after 318 new cases were recorded last week with four deaths.

This brings to 22,421 the number of confirmed cases since the outbreak of the disease in Cameroon; 21,510 persons have recovered from the infection, and 433 deaths have been recorded since March when the first cases surfaced.

According to MINSANTE, the recovery rate is 90%, while fatality rate stands at 1.9% the case fatality rate, with severity rate at 1.25% and the bed occupancy rate standing at 1.3%.

Based on this, health authorities have advised that barrier measures should be strengthened, as people have neglected social distancing measures, and have forgotten about hand washing and the wearing of masks.

Coronavirus infection figures are on a spiking rise in Europe and the United States, with most parts of England under lockdown.
Despite a relative slump in new infections and deaths,

Cameroonian authorities warned the country has not yet overcome the disease as many people think.

Last month, Higher Education Minister cancelled graduation ceremonies in all Higher Education institutions for this year, as a measure towards respecting social distancing.
A few days ago, Communication Minister, in a press release, indicated Cameroon has not defeated the Coronavirus.
After observing a relaxation of barrier measures amid rising infections globally, the reconfinement of populations across the world is a measure that should reawaken people’s consciousness about the virus, says MINCOM.
