Coup d'état in Niger Foiled by Military.
By Washira Helene
A coup d’état attempt in Niger was foiled by the military on Wednesday, July 26, 2023. The coup plotters, who were reportedly led by a group of disgruntled soldiers, attempted to take control of the capital city of Niamey. However, they were quickly arrested by loyal troops.
The coup attempt came just two days after the inauguration of new President Mohamed Bazoum. Bazoum, a former interior minister, was elected in April 2023. His predecessor, Mahamadou Issoufou, had served two terms as president.
The coup plotters reportedly claimed that they were acting to protect the country from corruption and mismanagement. However, the government has dismissed these claims, saying that the coup was an attempt to overthrow a democratically elected government.
The foiled coup is a reminder of the instability that Niger has faced in recent years. The country has been struggling to combat terrorism and other security threats. In 2020, a coup d’état overthrew the government of Mali, a neighboring country.
The international community has condemned the coup attempt in Niger. The United Nations, the African Union, and the United States have all called for the restoration of democracy in the country.
It remains to be seen what the long-term implications of the coup attempt will be. However, it is clear that Niger is facing a serious challenge to its democracy.
