Covid 19 prevention: School children go hawking as government shuts schools

The number of school children hawking items in the streets of Douala keep increasing by the day since the shutting down of schools on Wednesday March 18th 2020 to curb the spread of coronavirus in Cameroon. Pupils and students have taken advantage to engage in income generating activities.

“Since there is no school, my mother says I should sell groundnuts to have some money” says an eleven year old form one student with a tray of half full of groundnuts .

Others are helping their parents sell in shops or do other activities out door contrary to a decision of the Prime Minister for kids to stay home and be safe from coronavirus.

In a release signed by the minister of social affairs Monday March 23rd 2020, Pauline Irene Ngene called on parents to keep their kids at home stressing that the break is not for money making but for health reasons.

Some critics think shutting down schools while other activities are still going on is useless. They argue that parents might still go to work attract the virus and later contaminate people at home. They have been suggesting a total shutdown of the country.

As of Monday March 23rd, there are a total of 56 infected cases in Cameroon.
