CRM Officials Say Protest Must Hold

At a press conference in Yaounde Friday May 31, the first Vice President of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement CRM says that authorities have banned 30 out of their 47 protest declarations. And they are yet to have feedback over the remaining 17.

But Mamadou Mocta insists that they will defy the consequences and push through with the planned national protest.
Mocta argued that the CRM has always been on the side of the law.

But Government has intentionally targetted the part with injustice. “We are not going to allow authorities abuse the law and liberties enshrined in the constitution, we are therefore demonstrating on the 1st and 8th of June,” he echoed.
He said they will march because Government has always refused to accept their protest notices which they percieve as an act of intimidation.

Supporters and sympathizers are using the twin protests to demand the relese of their President Prof Maurice Kamto and at least 200 comrades arrested in January.

But that is not all. As Mocta reveals, “we demand a consensual reform of the electoral code before any election. We say No to disguised exclusion of the CRM and her allies from the political playground.” They also want the release of all those arrested in connection with the Anglophone separatist conflict and an immidiate end to violence in the North West and South West regions.

As Kamto’s supporters remained determined to face whatever comes out on Saturday, adminsitrative authorities are taking measures to ensure the protest does not hold. Apart from the ban, anti riot vehicles from the police and Gendarmerie have been stationed in strategic parts of Cameroon’s economic capital, Douala this Friday.

MMI learnt it is a similar atmosphere in Bafoussam and Yaounde where security officers have increased patrols to deter any unauthorised gathering. Authorities say the planned protest constitute a threat to public disorder and they must foil any move to make it happen.
The first Vice President of the CRM has urged the General Delegation of National Security to shun violence but peacefully guard the demonstrations as the law requires them to do.
