Uncertainty continues to loom ahead of October 1, the day Cameroon’s Anglophone Regions gained independence from Britain. Many say they fear, government forces will like in past years, crackdown on the English-speaking community — in an attempt to prevent pro-independence activists from commemorating the day. The day has always been described as a day of “national mourning” by Separatists, fighting for a breakaway state called Ambazonia.




Ahead of October 1, many are also frightened that there would be more violent clashes between government an non-state forces. Their fears have been triggered by videos of separatists mobilizing, with their leaders threatening to engage in fierce battle on that day.




Ahead of October 1, members of the Nigeria’s Indegenous People of Biafra, IPOB movement have expressed solidarity with their Cameroonian brothers, who initiated a fight for an Independent state called, *Ambazonia* since 2016. In a recently released note, IPOB executive, Mazi Chika, reiterated ties between both entities, promising to strengthen their alliances.



The Senior Divisional Officer, SDO of Manyu Division in Cameroon’s South West Region has restricted movements of motorbikes and private cars in his area of command — ahead of October 1st. He has also prohibited mass gatherings. October 1 is commemorated as the day “Southern Cameroons Independence” gained independence from Britain, by joining the majority French Cameroon (La Republique du Cameroun).



Cameroon’s Trade Minister, Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana has denied reports of price hikes on cooking gas in the country. In a latest release, he said the price has remained unchanged; 6,500frs for a 12.5kg of gas bottle.



Transport Minister, Massena Ngalle Bibehe has installed surveillance cameras on 100 inter-urban buses. The move is aimed at monitoring activities of drivers while on the wheel, and to curb road accidents.



A Cameroonian scholar in Germany, Nchumbonga George Lekelefac has written an open letter to H.E. Paul Biya requesting an end to the Anglophone crisis. In his letter, he proposed that general amnesty be granted to all “political prisoners. He also called for the withdrawal of troops from the two English regions.
