A trending picture of a political prisoner at the Laquintinie Hospital in Douala chained to his hospital bed has received serious backlash.
Amidst an avalanche of criticisms, Professor Noël Essomba, the Director of the Laquintinie Hospital says over a dozen other prisoners admitted at the hospital are equally in chains.
Professor Noël Essomba says he has confronted the authorities about the situation.
“There are more than a dozen detainees at the Laquintinie Hospital who are chained to their beds,” he revealed. “The prison guards are obliged to chain them to their beds. I say oblige because to us as doctors this is not normal,” he added.
Professor Noël Essomba says he has written letters to the Governor of the Littoral Region to find another solution on how to keep detainees under guard while at the hospital.
“I wrote to the Governor on Thursday to tell him that the situation annoys me and that we should find a solution to it, ” revealed Professor Noël Essomba
