Disappearance of two Cameroonians in border locality creates fresh tensions with Equatorial Guinea

In the wake of reawaken tensions between the Cameroonians and the Equatorial Guineans at the border, the alleged disappearance of two Cameroonians for several days now have come to further dampen the already volatile relations between citizens of both countries at the borders.

They have not been seen for weeks since they went to their plantations on the borders of the land under dispute between Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea.

Equatorial Guinean military men are known to frequently carry out patrols in the area.

It is widely claimed that there have been more of such abductions along these border towns between Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea.

Residents in these border towns say “One does not spend a week here in Kye-Ossi without witnessing the kidnapping of Cameroonian peasants having their farms near the disputed land which divide’s the two neighbouring countries of the Community of Central African States (CEMAC)”.

She equally revealed that the most recent of these abductions happened on June 10th, 2020 when a compatriot was who went to his plantation was kidnapped by the defence forces of Equatorial Guinea.

She adds that the victim was able to regain freedom only after the intervention of the Administrative and the security authorities of the Kye-Ossi district.

While officials of both countries are currently undergoing some negotiations to foster relations between the two countries in Yaounde, the coexistence between the two peoples at the borders of both countries is expected to take centre stage during the discussions at the security meeting.

The discussion which is an initiative by presidents of both countries, Paul Biya and Teodoro Obiang Nguema is co-hosted by the Cameroonian minister of Defence Joseph Beti Assomo and his Equatorial Guinean counterpart, Leandro Bekale Nkogo.
