Disgruntled commercial riders demand release of seized motorbikes in Bamenda

By Ndinwa Ernest

Commercial bike riders have called on the Northwest administration to order the release of their motorbikes seized by uniform officers in Bamenda.

The riders say the automobiles are their only source of income.

Hundreds of motorbikes have were seized around commercial avenue and other parts of Mankon in Bamenda II Sub Division.

Bike rider syndicates have reportly not been able to complain for fear of being victimised by the authorities who are always quick to accuse them of supporting separatist fighters.

Speaking to MMI on Wednesday May 18, 2022, one of the victims said, “I was transporting a lady whose daughter put to birth at the Regional Hospital in Bamenda on Saturday when we were intercepted at City Chemist Roundabouts by soldiers. I told them I was going to the hospital only to receive a clap from one of them while the other insulted me in French, calling me Amba. They pulled the old woman off the bike and and took the bike to their truck. I haven’t been able to get the bike since then, “.

Many have also testified that when the heavy military hardwares that have inundated the town of Bamenda were entering the town from the other sub divisions and divisions to take part in 20th May celebrations, tens of motor bikes ceased from their owners could be seen in their trucks.

It is still not clear if the motor bikes would be returned to the rightful owners or not and what the authorities are doing about it.
