US president Donald Trump was allegedly rushed to one of the secret bunkers in the White House for safety as crowds protested the “killing” by police of African-American George Floyd.
New York Times reports that he was taken to the bunker as demonstrators pulled metal barricade away from the White House gates on Friday evening. Protesters could be heard all night chanting their support for murdered Floyd.
The population however thinned down with time and the secret service officers were able to expand their perimeter and barriers around the Lafayette Park across from the White House. Six arrests were made during the protest as confirmed by the secret service.
Donald Trump has often been accused of racist tendencies and comments especially during the 2016 race for the White House where he was openly endorsed by the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) a racist white supremacist group which believes that blacks are the inferior beings in all aspects and thus be treated such.
The demonstrations who are said to have affected over a dozen US states have turned violent in most parts. Riot squads have been further deployed over America to help curb the excesses of the rioters. Trump has been continuously urged to address the nation and call for calm and serenity in the face of growing violence.
At least 40 cities across the US have imposed curfews and National Guard members have been activated in 15 states.
Just one out of the 4 police officers that were involved in the Floyd incident that led to his death has been charged so far. The former officer, Derek Chauvin has been charged with third degree murder and manslaughter. Protesters are however saying the charge is not harsh enough in comparison with what he and three other police officers did.
While protesters are demanding for the immediate arrest and charging of the other three officers, investigations into the matter is said to be progressing.
