The Douala Military Court has today slammed a 15-year jail term on Amabo Marcel, a legal mind and human rights activist.
Marcel Amabo who was arrested late 2017 in connection with the huge explosion at the National Petroleum Depot, SCPD was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment with another accused while two of his alleged accomplices were discharged and acquitted.
“Marcel Amabo was standing trial with three other accused persons on the SCDP incident that you know which occurred, September 2017.Two of the co-accused were discharged and acquitted but Marcel Amabo and one other guy were found guilty and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment each,” one of his lawyers, Barrister Tamfu Richard told Mimi Mefo Info.
The legal mind described the court’s decision as unfair :
“I am preparing to file an appeal in the days ahead. I have ten days to do that… ”
Marcel Amabo has been in jail for over one year now.
What Happened On September 2017?
As President Paul Biya prepared to address the 72nd United Nations General Assembly I’m New York on Friday September 22, 2017 amid wave of protests in the North West and South West regions, there was a huge explosion of a homemade bomb at the Société Camerounaise des Dépôts Pétroliers (SCDP), in Mboppi, Douala, Cameroon’s Economic Capital.
The SCDP it should be recalled, is a strategic location where tons of kerosene, gasoline and some other oil and petroleum products are stored.
The Governor of the Littoral Region, Samuel Dieudonné Ivaha Diboua reacted after visiting the site:
“We found a gas cylinder on the spot. So, the apparatus was put together on the spot.”
He qualified the explosion as a “criminal and terrorist attack” and vowed to bring the culprits to book. “Those are methods we all know. They – the culprits- did this at the wrong place because we are in Douala. Nothing remains hidden in Douala,” governor Ivaha Diboua declared.
