US Diplomat Urges Peace and Stability in Cameroon for Investment Growth

The US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs has articulated the United States’ desire to witness peace and stability in Cameroon, fostering an environment conducive to investment.

Tibor Nagy Jr. conveyed this sentiment to the press following his meeting with President Paul Biya on Monday, March 18, 2019. He emphasised the importance of creating conditions that facilitate profitable investment for American investors in Cameroon.

Regarding discussions on the Anglophone crisis, Nagy maintained the confidentiality of diplomatic conversations but characterised his dialogue with President Biya as “frank, honest, and direct.” He commended President Biya for his understanding of the situation in Cameroon.

Addressing the media attention surrounding his prior statements on France 24 TV and Radio RFI, Nagy praised the vibrancy of the Cameroonian press and clarified his position, stating, “I am neither a devil nor an angel. I am just a human being like everyone else.”

Analysis:

The meeting between the US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs and President Paul Biya garnered significant anticipation, both domestically and internationally. This anticipation stemmed from Nagy’s previous comments on pressing issues in Cameroon, notably the Anglophone crisis and the detention of Professor Maurice Kamto, a candidate in the 2018 presidential election.

Nagy’s assertion of the US’s desire for the well-being of Cameroonians resonates deeply, reflecting the gravity of the topics discussed. Observers note that Cameroonians currently face challenges in enjoying their rights, with ongoing violations and unrest in the North West and South West regions since 2016. Consequently, Nagy’s statement implies a call for an end to the violence in these Anglophone regions.

Nagy’s critique of the Cameroonian government’s handling of the crisis underscores the need for effective and proactive measures to address the situation. Given the US’s role as a proponent of democracy globally, Nagy’s stance likely encompasses concerns about political prisoners and overall political stability in Cameroon.

As Nagy concludes his visit to the Unity Palace, analysts anticipate potential adjustments in the government’s approach to resolving the Anglophone crisis and addressing issues with militants from the Cameroon Renaissance Movement party. While some sceptics question whether Nagy’s impartial stance will persist despite receiving honours from President Biya, others draw parallels with similar instances, such as CAF President Ahmad’s steadfastness following a comparable gesture in 2018.
