Douala: One injured as council agents molest officer for interfering in their activities

A national security officer was molested in a squabble with elements of the Municipal Council Police for interfering in the latter’s activities, in Douala, Littoral Region of Cameroon.

The incident took place on Friday, September 23, 2022.

According to an eyewitness, the Municipal police stormed the vicinity and began seizing people’s goods when the police officer intervened.

He recounted: ” I was discussing with a friend when we saw a pick-up truck coming. It was filled with elements of the municipal police. They engaged in seizing people’s goods along the streets…They underestimated the police officer by asking who he is to tell them what to do or not.”

The exchange is said to have deteriorated as they exchanged words before going physical.

“Later on, about four members of the municipal police descended on the police officer. They went to the extent of tearing the police officer’s uniform, ” added the eyewitness.

During the squabble, an element of the municipal police was shot in the leg by the security officer.

In an interview with equinox TV, a civil society actor reiterated the superiority of the police officer over the municipal police and called for collaboration between the two parties.

According to him, “the municipal police has not still understood its functions. They have not yet accepted the fact that they are under the National Police. This means when they are faced with any difficulty, the municipal police is supposed to seek advice from the National Police.”

Reacting to the incident, the city mayor of Douala, Dr. Roger Mbassa Ndine indicated that “investigations opened by the competent administrative and police authorities will make it possible to establish with precision the responsibilities of each party, the Douala City Council reserving the right to legal proceedings if necessary.”
