At the age of 24, Dr. Thakgalo Thibela stands out as one of the youngest female doctors in South Africa, serving as a beacon of hope and inspiration for young girls throughout Africa. Her impressive journey, characterised by outstanding intelligence and steadfast commitment, demonstrates the importance of following one’s dreams, no matter the challenges.

Thibela’s exceptional talent became evident from an early age. Skipping a grade in primary school, she was moved up from Grade 8 to Grade 10 because of her exceptional intelligence. Her acceptance at the prestigious University of Witwatersrand at the age of 16 was made possible with the support of a bursary from the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC).

Fast forward to 2020, Thibela surpassed all expectations by earning a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) at the impressive age of 21. This accomplishment quickly established her as the youngest female doctor in South Africa, leaving a mark on the nation’s medical history.

However, Thibela’s journey did not stop at that point. Immersed in the fast-paced world of medicine, she completed her internship at Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg, gaining invaluable experience. She is currently fulfilling her community service at Mapulaneng Hospital, showcasing her dedication to giving back to the community that helped her achieve her goals.

She has even bigger aspirations for the future. Striving to pursue a career in neurosurgery, Thibela is resolute in her goal to break barriers and succeed in a field that has historically been male-dominated. With her relentless determination and remarkable intelligence, she is poised to reach her goals, motivating others to follow suit.

Dr. Thibela’s narrative conveys a compelling message for young girls throughout Africa, extending beyond her individual achievements. It challenges the stereotype that some fields are off-limits, highlighting the boundless potential within every person. Her story is an inspiration, encouraging young girls to follow their dreams and explore opportunities in various fields like science and medicine.

Dr. Thakgalo Thibela is making significant strides in the medical field, and her journey is far from over. The young professional, with an inspiring journey that has captured global interest, is on track to become a prominent figure in African medicine, inspiring young girls to aspire for greatness.
