The future is calling, and a group of young Cameroonian changemakers called the Earthlight Ambassadors are answering the call! These passionate students are on a mission to rid Buea’s schools of single-use plastics, recognizing the immense threat they pose to their environment and climate.

“Did you know that plastic water bottles end up in oceans and landfills every year?,” they ask, highlighting the shocking reality of our throw-away culture. They point out the financial, health, and environmental costs of these “discarded after every use” bottles, emphasizing that “switching to reusable water bottles is not only eco-friendly but also healthy and cost-effective.“

Their message is clear: lead by example. As students, they understand the power they hold to influence their peers, families, and communities. They envision a ripple effect, starting with their “positive example” and spreading to a “sustainable movement” embracing #PlasticFreeSchools and #GradesofGreen.

But the Earthlight Ambassadors don’t stop there. They delve deeper into the alarming statistics: “Only 9 percent of all plastic waste has been recycled, while 79 percent has ended up in landfills, dumps, or the natural environment.” They paint a vivid picture of the “chemicals and microplastics” entering our water sources, urging everyone to “avoid single-use plastics and adopt reusable materials.“

The final call to action is stark: “Over 150 million tonnes of plastic waste can be found in our oceans, with 8 million tonnes more added each year. This is the equivalent of a garbage truckload being dumped every minute.” They remind us of the microplastics lurking in our seafood, emphasizing the urgent need for alternatives.

The Earthlight Ambassadors’ message is powerful, their determination unwavering. They are more than just students; they are the voice of a generation demanding change. Let their call echo through Buea, Cameroon, and beyond, inspiring a global movement towards #PlasticFreeSchools and a greener future for all.

Join the Earthlight Ambassadors in their fight against plastic pollution! Share their message, support their initiatives, and become part of the #GradesofGreen revolution.
