Elements of the Gendarmerie Brigade of Batare-Oya have paraded four suspects they say are gold mine thieves. The suspects are said to have been arrested in separate operations.
The first suspect according to Gendarmerie sources is said to have been arrested in an operation at a gold mine in the Mbangaza vicinity, Batare-Oya in the Lom and Djerem Division, East Region.
More complaints from locals are also believed to have initiated an investigation which led to the arrest of the other suspects. “The suspects are said to be the main gang terrorizing the population, breaking into gold mines and escaping with either gold or money was gotten from their sale,” the Gendarmes revealed.
None of the booty stolen by the suspects was successfully recovered by the Gendarmes. The suspects, meanwhile, have been transferred to the Bertoua Central Prison where further investigations are set to be done.
