The Mayor of Mamfe, Ashu Robertson Tabenchong, has remarked that survivors of the Egbekaw massacre in Mamfe, who are now taking treatment in Buea, are “very happy”.

Their happiness, he said, stems from a promise by the government to pay their hospital bills.

The victims are survivors of a gruesome armed attack that left at least 25 dead in Egbekaw, a locality in Mamfe.

Mayor Tabenchong, who was at the Buea Regional Hospital recently, where some of the victims have been receiving treatment, encouraged them to remain hopeful that peace will one day reign in their locality.

“I have gone round the ward with the nurses in attendance and I have seen the patients. I am here to encourage them and to give them some good words,” the Mayor told journalists.

He added that, “The Head of State has given firm instructions for their medical bills to be settled and they are very happy.”

Survivors’ Testimonies

During the Mayor’s visit, some of the survivors mounted courage to narrate how the barbaric attack happened on the morning of November 6.

One of the victims who lost his leg during the attack said, “As we managed to escape, we met with the military who asked if I was also shot. I was then rushed to the hospital in Mamfe unconscious.”

Another survivor who incurred a fracture while attempting to flee from the attack narrated that he fell behind his house and fractured his leg.

“I struggled into a toilet where I hid myself. Then, some boys came and set ablaze a house. Fortunately for me, it didn’t reach where I was hiding,” the survivor explained.

In a shocking and tragic incident, the gunmen reported to be Ambazonia separatist fighters shot and burnt dozens of civilians in their sleep.

No separatist group has however claimed responsibility for the attack.
