Sunday, October 27, 2024, marked exactly five years since the former Mayor of Buea, Ekema Patrick Esunge, travelled to the world beyond.

He died from unclear circumstances on October 27, 2019, in Douala.

Memories of his leadership style and legacy reverberate through the community.

Ekema, who was well-known for his assertive style and ardent patriotism, served as mayor for a period that saw both significant accomplishments and controversy, embodying a complex legacy that has left an indelible mark on Buea and its people.

As Mayor of Buea, Ekema took bold steps to enforce order and combat separatist activities, often confronting challenges associated with the ongoing Anglophone Crisis.

His unwavering commitment to unity earned him high regard from some residents and political allies, including traditional leaders, who honoured him as “Nyamoto Kpwatolo” for his resilience and dedication to peace in the region.

Under his leadership, Buea witnessed increased infrastructural development and community outreach initiatives, including scholarship programs and the promotion of cultural events aimed at strengthening local identity.

A Controversial Legacy

However, Ekema’s career was not without its controversies.

He handled dissent, particularly against separatist sentiments, in a way that sometimes polarised the public, and critics often accused him of being heavy-handed.

His opposition to certain local elites also spurred public disagreements, creating an environment where his actions were both lauded and questioned by various groups in the community.

The void left by Ekema’s passing has impacted Buea, as the community reflects on his contributions and the political legacy he left behind.

His sudden death at 43 stirred emotions across the South West Region and prompted state recognition. Minister Atanga Nji conveyed presidential acknowledgement of Ekema’s public service, despite his imperfections.

Today, Buea residents remember him as a leader who believed in his vision for a united community, even as debates continue over the long-term effects of his policies on the municipality.

In 2019, an interim Mayor, Dr John Lyonga Efande, succeeded Ekema Patrick.

After the 2020 Municipal and Legislative Elections, Barrister David Mafani Namange took office as Mayor and has been leading the Buea Council’s affairs since then.
