ELECAM Board Chair Applauds February 9 Elections

Enow Abrams Egbe has expressed satisfaction on the electoral process. The board chair of elections Cameroon speaking Tuesday February 18th in Yaounde remarked that voting on February 9th was free and fair.

“Elecam has shown to the world that it is independent and credible by conducting free and fair elections in Cameroon. I thank all workers of the body”.

To the former governor, “minor incidents” in the North West and South West regions “can not discredit the polls”.

For political parties and individuals that have petitioned voting process for legislative election in their constituencies, Enow Abrams Egbe called on the petitioners to accept the verdict of the constitutional council in good faith.

Political commentators have interpreted the statement saying it is meant to prepare the minds of petitioners of an eminent unfavourable out come.

The board chair of ELECAM also called on board members and workers of the structure to double their efforts and prepare for the next challenge of organising regional election. “It will be the first regional election in Cameroon and we have the obligation to conduct a peaceful election”.

The positive appreciation of the electoral process by Enow Abrams Egbe contradicts statements from the national commission of human rights and freedoms, chairman, Dr. Chemuta Divine Banda who this week said Cameroon is interested in organising periodic elections not minding if the process respects democratic principles.
Other rights groups like RHEDAC, Un Monde d’Avenir and the Church like the National Episcopal Conference have decried poor electoral process.
