Elephants have killed at least one woman in Maroua, the Far North region of Cameroon’s capital.

The elephants, according to reports, left Waza National Park on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, passing through Petté village before getting into the heart of Maroua.

The elephants in Balda, Bogo subdivision killed a woman whose name MMI could not get.

Reacting to the situation, the regional delegate of Forestry and Wildlife for the Far North said poaching and indiscriminate cutting down of trees are the main causes of elephants running away from bushes.

“We are not surprised to see these elephants arriving in the city centre. That is why our fight at the level of the Waza National Park is to go to war against poachers and those who cut down trees to turn them into coal,” said Colonel Jean Nyemeg, regional delegate of Forestry and Wildlife.

According to the delegate, the animals are running to where the climate is favourable.

“Imagine that today in this park the water pools are almost non-existent because of the lack of trees and the animals are forced to seek refuge where the climate is more or less favorable,” he added

It took the intervention of the forces of law and order to control the curious population in order to avoid further damage.

At the time of this report, a team was constituted to control and lead the elephants back to Waza.
