ENEO Cameroon Subcontractors Announce Two-week Strike Over Billions Of Unpaid Bills

Subcontractors of Cameroon’s electricity distribution company, ENEO, say their strike action will start on August 31 as they accused the body of owing them some FCFA 6 billion.

ENEO is a partner to the Association of Electricity and Water Companies of Cameroon (ESSELEC), a national electricity distributor calling for the strike action.

The latter has threatened to abstain from work beginning this August 31, if the debt of FCFA 6 billion accumulated by Eneo within five years to its subcontractors is not settled.

“ENEO’s delinquencies are reaching very alarming proportions to the point where several of our companies have gone outright bankrupt. Our employees are directly affected by wage delays and it is a question of taking a break to claim our due,” said Mathurin Zebaze, President of ASSELEC.

This could be particularly dangerous for ENEO as these subcontractors employ close to 5,000 people.

Stopping their activities risks jeopardising the maintenance and distribution of electricity around the country.

The Association of Electricity and Water Companies of Cameroon has equally accused ENEO of unilaterally fixing the prices of services which they deem doesn’t meet their charges.

They also accused the national electricity distributor of recruiting personnel duly trained by their subcontractors without compensation.

At the time of this report, ENEO managed has not released any statement pregarding the subcontractors’ concerns.
