Eto’o Got 44th Birthday Boost After Court Clears Him for CAF Elections

Cameroonian Football legend Samuel Eto’o has achieved a significant legal victory, overturning a ban that had prevented his candidacy for a position on the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) Executive Committee. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled in favor of the 44-year-old Cameroonian who celebrates his birthday today. This allows him to stand in the upcoming CAF elections scheduled for March 12 in Cairo.

Eto’o, who has been serving as the president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) since 2021, faced exclusion from the CAF Executive Committee elections due to previous disciplinary actions. In September 2024, FIFA imposed a six-month ban on Eto’o for “offensive behaviour and violations of the principles of fair play” during the U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia.

Additionally, CAF fined him $200,000 in July 2024 for acting as a brand ambassador for a betting company, a decision that was later overturned on appeal.

Final Decision with CAF EGA

Despite these controversies, CAS found sufficient grounds to overturn CAF’s decision to exclude Eto’o from the list of candidates for the Executive Committee elections. The court ordered CAF to reinstate Eto’o’s candidacy. It however, emphasised that the final evaluation of candidates rests with the CAF Extraordinary General Assembly.

The CAF Extraordinary General Assembly, set for March 12 at the Marriott Mena House in Cairo, will bring together presidents of CAF’s 54 member associations and other key stakeholders to elect members of the Executive Committee and representatives to the FIFA Council. CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe is running unopposed for a second term.

Eto’o’s reinstatement adds a notable dimension to the elections, as he seeks to influence the future direction of African football through a role on CAF’s Executive Committee. The assembly will evaluate his candidature alongside others, marking a pivotal moment for the governance of the sport on the continent.
