Exclusive interview: Mother of Yvonne who allegedly beat daughter to death says guilty, not the first time

By David Atangana

A few days ago, MMI published an article stating that police officers in Kumba rescued a lady from the hands of an angry mob after she was accused of haven beaten her child to death.

Mulango Yvonne, according to reports, thrashed her four-year-old daughter who later gave up the ghost. The infant, who had been rushed to a nearby hospital, reportedly died due to severe bleeding.

The incident occurred in Fiango Kumba on Thursday, June 1, 2023.

In an exclusive interview granted MMI, Billa Juan Bakunte, the grandmother to the deceased child, confirmed that she died of “internal bleeding” after severe beatings from her mother, Mulango Yvonne.

She further recounts other instances of Yvonne’s brutality on her own children, stating that all the children have marks of torture and violence perpetrated by her.

Thanks for accepting to talk to us. Can you please tell us exactly what happened?

She beat that child either on Wednesday. It was yesterday that she called me that the child was not eating but bleeding. We took the child to the hospital where she was administered some treatment without telling us what the problem was. She called today at around 4 am that the child was behaving a type. I told her to give her water since I was not there at that time. When I got up this morning to go and get some firewood, I received a call from her and all I could hear was ‘Salome oh, Salome oh’.

I thought she was at her house but she had taken her to another hospital. When I got there I saw her crying that Salome had died.

This is not the first time she is doing this to her own child. The other one ran for his life after she poured him with hot water. It was by the grace of God that he survived. All of her children have marks of torture and violence perpetrated by her. I don’t know how a woman will treat her own children this way. Imagine this younger child, a Nursery 1 pupil, is gone. As the grandmother of those kids, I knew they will be the ones to bury me but see what Yvonne has done! She does not want the children to be around me. The neighbours are all complaining about the way Yvonne beats children. What pains me so much, is this my granddaughter that she has killed. Two months ago, we buried the elder sister who was poisoned.

Does Yvonne live together with the children and her husband?

She does not live with the husband. The man with whom she delivered that child had died in Bertoua. So she lives only with the children. Each time she goes out and comes back, she will turn the children into punching bags.

From what you are saying, Yvonne beat this child and was rushed to the hospital before she died?

Yes, that is what happened.

When did this happen?

It was Wednesday, May 31, that she got the child well beaten as she even lost her appetite. We rushed her to the hospital on June 1. While at the hospital, the doctors said it was as a result of internal bleeding after the beatings. She refused medical advice that the child should be admitted for treatment and took her home. While there, the situation worsened and she took her again but to a different hospital where the child died.

Thanks for talking to us! Our sincere condolence for the demise of your grandchild.
