Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp and other META apps are down
Millions of users worldwide have reported disruptions across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and other Meta-owned platforms such as Threads, in a massive outage that began earlier today.
According to Downdetector, a website that tracks service issues, complaints about Facebook outages started surging at around 6 p.m. GMT on December 11, 2024. Reports have since skyrocketed, with over 100,000 complaints recorded for Facebook alone.
Instagram and WhatsApp users also experienced widespread problems, with Downdetector logging over 11,800 and 9,600 reports of disruptions, respectively, during the same time frame.
“This is frustrating,” said one user on platform X. “All my apps are down, and I have no way to reach people!”
The outage has affected users worldwide, with significant complaints originating from the United States and other countries across Europe, Africa, and Asia. The Mirror has reached out to Meta for an official comment, but no response has been received as of this report.
This isn’t the first time Meta’s platforms have gone dark this year. In a similar incident earlier in 2024, Facebook experienced widespread outages due to log-in errors, leaving users unable to access their accounts for hours.
Outages like these have drawn attention to the increasing dependence on social media platforms for both personal and professional communication. Many users took to Twitter and other operational platforms to express their frustration over the disruption.
“These outages keep happening. Meta needs to ensure more reliability,” one user complained. Another quipped, “We don’t need a reminder of what life was like before social media—fix it!”
