Social media giants, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, have all gone off air in what is an unprecedented crash.
The three social media apps – all owned by Facebook Inc, and using shared infrastructure – stopped working today at about 5 pm GMT+1.
Facebook users suddenly realized they could not access information after which an error message appeared on their browsers informing them that they could not connect. Instagram and WhatsApp worked for a while before failing to deliver messages.
A Facebook spokesperson, Andy Stone confirmed this on Twitter – “We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products” before proceeding to offer assurances and an apology: “We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience.”
Instagram’s Twitter page also shared a similar update.
“Instagram and friends are having a little bit of a hard time right now, and you may be having issues using them,” Instagram wrote on its communications page, followed by a reassurance, “Bear with us, we’re on it! #Instagramdown”
Twitter was also used by WhatsApp to update its users.
“We’re aware that some people are experiencing issues with WhatsApp at the moment. We’re working to get things back to normal and will send an update here as soon as possible,” it said.
More updates to follow as soon as MMI gets them.
