The omission of Fai Collins from the Indomitable Lions’ African Cup of Nations squad sent shockwaves through the Cameroonian football community, especially the fans. Critics howled, questioning Rigobert Song’s judgement and lamenting the absence of an experienced defender. But amidst the furor, a nuanced perspective emerges: was Song’s decision actually a shrewd move in Fai’s best interest?

While including Fai would have bolstered the squad’s defensive abilities, it would have thrown the player into a precarious juggling act. Having landed a new club, FC Radnicki Nis, just weeks before the tournament, leaving again so soon could have jeopardised his nascent opportunity. Imagine breaking the news to your new team—barely unpacked from your bags—that you’re whisking yourself away for another international stint.

Not only would it hinder integration, but it could cost him his hard-earned starting spot.

For club players clinging to precarious positions, lengthy international absences are often met with anxiety. For someone like Fai, who has been clubless for months and clinging to a lifeline, the risk is exponentially higher.

Song, however, recognised this. Fai’s inclusion in the provisional squad, even without a club, hinted at the coach’s appreciation for his talent. But with a fresh start secured, missing the AFCON, while painful for fans, could be a calculated gamble for Fai’s long-term career.

This is not to dismiss the loss of a seasoned defender for Cameroon. However, it’s crucial to acknowledge the complexities beyond the simple “coach vs. player” narrative. Song, in prioritising Fai’s club stability over immediate tournament gains, has demonstrated a rare quality in football: prioritising a player’s overall well-being over a team’s short-term needs.

In a results-driven industry, such selflessness deserves applause. While Fai’s absence stings, it might just be the nudge he needs to reignite his career. And that, ultimately, could benefit both players and the country in the long run. So, before we rush to judge Song’s decision, let’s consider the bigger picture: a coach taking a bold bet on a player’s future, perhaps paving the way for a stronger, more secure Fai Collins to return to the national fold, even better than before.

Fai Collins, who left Saudi club Al Taï in July 2023 after a two-season tenure, has a rich footballing history with Belgian clubs Standard Liege and Charleroi.
