Far North: 38-year-old man swept off bridge in Kaélé by heavy rain currents

A 38-year-old man by name Wadou Vouley lost his life while attempting to cross a bridge in the Kilimbiri, Kaélé division of the Far North Region.

Wadou said to originate from Bololo, a village in the same division, was on his way back from a friends funeral when the tragic incident occurred.

According to reports, the bridge was flooded, making the crossing highly dangerous for users. This was a result of heavy rain downpour between Saturday and Sunday.

Upon his arrival at the bridge, several other people were waiting for the water level to drop before crossing, but the man insisted he was in a hurry to join his family.

He then decided to take the risk of crossing not knowing that the act would cost him his life. He was overwhelmed by the water while in the middle of the bridge.

He tried to go back, crying for help but unfortunately, the crossing cost him his life.

“We always witness deaths here. The municipality of Kaélé does nothing to fix the bridge. The elites say nothing. It is a bridge abandoned for many years. Several people die here in the rainy season, washed away by the waters. If the bridge was very high, we shouldn’t have witnessed this kind of spectacle” decried a resident of Kaélé.

Elements of the Gendarmerie led by commander Abakachi rushed to the scene once alerted after which they successfully retrieved the corpse.

According to a retired civil servant, “the Mayor or his deputies had to go down to the field to take care of the body, it is not the job of the gendarmerie to bring the body out and then look for a tricycle to transport it”

He added,” What is the council’s job? The roads are impassable, the bridges are abandoned, no water or light. What does the municipality actually do? All are from the CPDM and it is during the campaign that the elites come with their big cars to give the 2000frs to the poor.
