The Douala Municipality in a bid to curb the massive urban disorder that is characteristic of the town, fines have been set for persons who occupy sidewalks in major roads in the town.
The fines set by the council from within 10,000FCFA to 250,000FCFA. The decree which legalized these fines was done on June 22, and it will be standing against the occupation of the sideways by Cars, Bike riders, and business owners amongst others.
The fines were broken down depending on what was it that occupied these side walks. For bikes caught parking by these roadsides, they would pay 10,000frs as fines, vehicles will pay 25,000frs, as well as mini business places like hair dressing saloons, carpentry and other similar establishments.
Parking of Pickup vehicles on sidewalks will be fined 50,000frs while other heavy trucks will have to pay 200,000frs. The heaviest fines will be billed on construction material depots by the sidewalks which will be 250,000frs.
The decree signed yesterday is part of the implementation of the “Operation return the sidewalks to Pedestrians” campaign which was launched by the Council some months ago. The operation is aimed at freeing the sideways which has for long been illegally occupied by various business personnel in an illegal manner for various informal activities.
