Football: Rangers FC Bafut shatters SW dream of elite football, qualifies for elite two

Rangers FC of Bafut, from the North West region of Cameroon, has shattered the dreams of the entire South West region to play elite football.

The dreams of the entire South West region were shattered when Best Stars Academy of Limbe failed to beat North West representatives, Rangers FC Bafut at the just-ended national interpools on Saturday, September 25.

With numerous sporting infrastructure in the South West region, the region had launched a campaign to bring back Elite Two to the South West but unfortunately for them, the North West region without a single sporting infrastructure worthy of the name had the final say.

After defeating Rizière FC of Tonga by two goals to nil in their first game at the Fotso Victor Stadium in Bandjoun in their first match, the boys of coach Anumewa Franklin needed just a draw over Best Stars Academy of Limbe to secure an elite ticket, which they did.

The draw means that Rangers FC Bafut joins two other clubs, Gazelle FC Garoua from the North region, AS Lausanne from the Center to make the list of three newly promoted clubs into elite two.

The South West region will have to wait again at least for another football season to start looking for a place in the elite football.

The North West region still maintains five clubs at the professional leagues. PWD Bamenda and Yong Sports Academy in the elite one, Vision Sport in women division one, Ita Mbong in women division two, and now Rangers FC in the elite two.

The recent exploits of the region in national sporting events especially football have reignited calls for a modern sporting infrastructure in the region.

They are even plans from these professional league clubs to boycott the league at a certain stage if they don’t see the efforts of the government to build a stadium in the region.
