Abdoulaye Yerima Bakary has been elected, the new Lamido of Maroua
The former Mayor of the Maroua II Council, Abdoulaye Yerima Bakary, has been elected, the new Lamido of Maroua, a Lamidat in Cameroon’s Far North Region
He emerged Lamido, following elections carried out Saturday, September 16, 2023, at the Lamidat of Maroua.
Authorities in Maroua opted for a democratic election instead of the usual age-old appointment system, following interest demonstrated by several candidates.
Abdoulaye Yerima Bakary, who once served as Mayor of Maroua II Council, secured 24 votes out of 34 electors, while former Minister of Housing and Urban Development secured 5 votes and 5 votes for others
The 53-year-old Abdoulaye Yerima Bakary replaces Bakary Yerima Bouba Aliou, who died on July 17, 2023.
His election has not gone down well with some denizens of Maroua, who question his output while he served as Mayor
” What good did he do for his Municipality? What will a person who was unable to lead a Municipality with honesty achieve at the head of a 1st degree chieftaincy?” Ismaila Abdourahman Abdourahman Ahmadou questioned.
However, another local was optimistic, sending a congratulatory message to the new chieftain.
“Congratulations to him, I respect the Lamido of Maroua,” Ben Abdel Salihou
It should be recalled that the late Bakary Yerima Bouba Aliou died after ruling for nearly two decades as the Lamido of Maroua.
He was one of the first 900 regional councillors appointed in Cameroon during the election of December 6, 2020.
The new Lamido, Abdoulaye Yerima Bakary, was Mayor of Maroua II from 2013 to 2020. He is the grandson of Hamadou Sourdjo, who reigned as Lamido for 36 years. His uncle, Yaya Tairou, was also a Lamido for 15 years.
