Forty-Four CPDM Militants Decamp to SDF in Obala

A group of forty-four militants from the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) has reportedly crossed over to the Social Democratic Front (SDF).

The defection took place in Obala, on the outskirts of Cameroon’s capital, Yaoundé. The SDF has hailed this development as a major achievement for the party.

“Exciting news from Obala! Over 44 former CPDM militants have just resigned and joined the SDF family. Welcome aboard!” the SDF announced on its official Facebook page.

The message was accompanied by a picture showing a celebratory gathering, presumably of the defectors. However, the SDF did not provide further details regarding the new members.

CPDM’s Recent Anniversary Celebration

The CPDM recently marked its 40th anniversary on March 24, a milestone that reaffirmed its dominance in Cameroon’s political landscape. Since the return of multiparty politics in 1990, the party has consistently won presidential elections and maintained a majority in both the Senate and Parliament.

During the anniversary celebration, CPDM members reiterated their support for President Paul Biya, urging him to run for re-election in this year’s presidential race. Biya, who has been in power since 1982, is now 92 years old. Despite concerns over his age, his supporters continue to see him as the right leader for the country.

However, the defection of CPDM militants to the SDF suggests that not all party members share the same confidence in Biya’s leadership and vision for Cameroon’s future.

SDF’s Political Ambitions

The SDF did not specify the reasons behind the CPDM militants’ decision to switch allegiance. However, the defection comes shortly after the SDF unveiled an ambitious political programme on March 1.

The three-point programme outlines key reforms, including ending the Anglophone crisis within 100 days, abolishing taxpayer-funded medical evacuations, and restoring the country to a federal system of governance.

The SDF has chosen Joshua Osih, an MP for Wouri Centre in the Littoral region, as its presidential candidate.

Could the party’s bold vision for Cameroon be the reason behind the CPDM militants’ defection? While the SDF has yet to confirm this, the recent developments suggest a shifting political landscape ahead of the upcoming elections.
