French company offers to build waste transformation plant in Northwest Region

A French waste management company, International Solutions for Environment, has tabled a proposal to the Northwest Regional Assembly to build a plant that will transform household waste into natural gas, fertilizer or electricity.

Meeting with authorities of the Regional Assembly recently, the company’s president, Jean-Claude Monnier, presented a plan of the project that aims to turn waste into wealth.

He said the plant will also create several eco jobs for youths and improve on socio-economic life in the Region.

“Also by recycling plastics, it will be possible to manufacture new plastic products locally, which are mostly imported,” Jean-Claude Monnier said.

“The incineration of non-recyclable products will generate electricity energy. And of course the Northwest Region will regain the quality of sanitation, cleanliness and public hygiene that she deserves,” he added.

The idea was well received by the President of the Northwest Regional Executive Council, Prof Fru Angwafo III.

He lauded the project and the company for taking interest in the Northwest Region, and said they will study the proposal and put necessary logistics in place to see that it is realised.

The waste management company submitted a draft memorandum of understanding to the Regional Assembly, which details the needs of the Northwest Region and the required budget for the project.

Jean-Claude Monnier said his company has already lobbied for sponsorship from international donors, who have accepted to sponsor the project, if the Northwest Regional Assembly welcomes the proposal.

The plan could revolutionise waste management in the Northwest Region.

Like many cities in Cameroon, Northwest Regional capital Bamenda has suffered waste management challenges for many years.

The city as well as other parts of the Region has no waste management plant. Household waste is collected and dumped or sometimes burnt on large junk sites.
