Akumbom Elvis Mccathy was among 111 pupil lawyers who took an oath into the Cameroon Bar before the High Court of Mezam in Bamenda on October 28.
But beyond his oath-taking is the story of a man who did not let his life to be defined by his 11-month stay behind bars at Kondengui, where he was jailed in connection with the Anglophone Crisis.
He describes his journey into the legal profession as one of resilience, determination, and personal transformation, and captures it in his inspiring expression: “From Behind Bars to the Bar.”
At the beginning of Cameroon’s Anglophone Crisis, Mccathy spent 11 months in prison following his arrest. He was subsequently released through a presidential pardon.
According to him, the experience behind bars profoundly influenced his decision to study law, inspiring him to pursue a profession through which he could better understand justice, legal rights, and the administration of law.
He enrolled for a law degree at the University of Bamenda and after obtaining an LLB proceeded to acquire a Master of Laws (LLM), specialising in Business Law, also from the same university.
After five years of university legal studies, he successfully passed the written and oral stages of the 2026 Cameroon Bar Examination, earning admission as an Advocate-in-Training.
He begins his two-year professional training under the tutelage of Abalu-Bobga & Co Law Firm at Old Town, Bamenda.
His admission marks not only an important professional achievement but also a remarkable personal milestone.
Academically, Mccathy is a multidisciplinary professional. He holds an HND in Communication from National Polytechnic as well as a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Accounting.
From an accounting background to legal scholarship, and from 11 months behind prison walls to taking an oath before the High Court, Mccathy’s story demonstrates that adversity does not have to determine one’s destiny.
