Authorities in Limbe III have arrested several individuals at the Mabeta Fishing Port as part of a crackdown on indecency and public nuisance. The operation, led by the gendarmerie at Chop Farm, targeted a popular area known as Big Kombo, frequented by commercial sex workers.

Prostitution and Violent Clashes

Among those detained were reportedly married women involved in prostitution, leading to violent altercations between their husbands and clients. According to Ismael Bayirou, Brigade Commander of the Chop Farm Gendarmerie, the arrests followed a surge in violent incidents in the area, some of which have resulted in bloodshed.

“Just last week, a man killed a businessman at this leisure spot after discovering his wife in bed with the victim. The perpetrator fled to Nigeria, but we managed to arrest his wife. Our investigations show that this area is becoming a hotspot for violence and uncivil behavior. We’ve received multiple reports of violent confrontations in this beach area, so we had to act to restore peace and order,” said Commander Bayirou.

Community Relief

The local community has expressed relief at the intervention, welcoming the crackdown on indecency and the efforts to address what they see as a growing moral decline in the area.

“We were becoming increasingly frustrated with the rising immorality in our community. Many women have turned to prostitution, mainly serving businesspeople from Nigeria, Benin, and other countries. These men often bring diseases that spread in our community. After reporting this to our traditional council, they decided to involve the security forces. We feel relieved now,” said John Eko, a notable resident of Mabeta Fishing Port.

The gendarmerie has confirmed that those arrested will be thoroughly investigated and transferred to Buea Central Prison for further legal proceedings.

Mabeta Fishing Port is a coastal community within the Limbe III subdivision, in the South West Region of Cameroon.
