Germany to boost Cameroon’s cotton sector

By Amina Hilda

Germany has taken an engagement to boost Cameroon’s cotton sector. The engagement was renewed Tuesday May 11 during a meeting grouping stakeholders in Yaounde.

Through the German Cooperation, the European country seeks to strengthen cotton production in the Adamawa, North and Far North regions. These regions are considered the highest poverty affected areas in Cameroon with 80 percent of the people surviving thanks to agriculture and livestock.

The meeting was therefore held to strengthen the production and local processing of cotton. Officials also discussed measures to improve development by transforming cotton into textile, explains.

According Elena Leonhardt, First Secretary of the German cooperation: “we hope that this will be the base for development of these other sectors, not only the production of cotton, but the transformation of cotton to textile.”

It should be noted that majority of cotton produced in Cameroon is exported to China. Meanwhile, just 2% of the cotton produced is transformed locally into textile and clothing products.
